Tampa Kobudo-Kai at Florida Aikido Center
Florida Aikido Center offers Kobudo weapons classes three times a week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 8:00 to 9:00pm and Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00am.
Kobudo is an Okinawan martial art that focuses on the mastery of various traditional weapons. At Tampa Kobudo-Kai, we focus on five specific weapons: the tanjo (fighting baton), the bo (long staff), the sai (three-pronged metal truncheon), the nunchaku (2-handled flail) and the kama (hand sickle). We will also work with other traditional weapon systems such as shuriken (throwing stars), tonfa (nightstick), bokken (wooden sword), chissai-bo (hand baton) and jo (walking stick). In addition, we will touch on modern weapons (knife and gun) as well as the use of everyday objects (everything from a rolled-up magazine to a towel, a neck tie, a broom, an umbrella or a tire iron) for self-defense.
Our Kobudo program is designed promote general health and wellness, as well as improve speed, strength, flexibility, perception, confidence, timing and coordination. Training includes dexterity and balance drills, weapon vs. weapon techniques, empty-hand vs. weapon techniques, scenario-based self-defense, takedowns, control moves, sparring and kata (forms).
Classes are free for Florida Aikido Center members or $35 a month for non-members.
For all Kobudo students there is a $20 equipment fee for each rank test.
